Cortisol is the main anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex, has a pronounced effect on all types of metabolism: carbohydrate, protein, fat and mineral metabolism. Receptors sensitive to cortisol are found in almost all cells. Cortisol levels determination could be used for the study of the steroid profile of blood serum or plasma by LC-MS/MS. Cortisol production is increased during periods of stress, and it is a major effector molecule in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) stress response. Cortisol levels increase with age and are often elevated in major depressive disorder, certain forms of hypertension, and Parkinson's disease.
