MALDI matrices
In Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS), the matrix consists of low-molecular-weight organic compounds that are co-crystallized with the analyte on a target substrate. The primary function of the matrix is to absorb energy from the laser irradiation and subsequently facilitate the "soft" ionization of the analyte molecules, often via proton transfer, thereby minimizing their fragmentation. Essential properties of matrix compounds include good solubility in solvents compatible with the analyte, low volatility under vacuum conditions, and chemical inertness towards the analyte.
