Glycine-d2 is the deuterium-labeled glycine and is intended for use as an internal standard for the quantification of glycine by GC- or LC-MS.
Glycine is a simple amino acid that is an essential substrate for the synthesis of several biomolecules such as creatine, purines, porphyrins, and glutathione (GSH). Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brainstem and spinal cord. It acts as a co-agonist of glutamate at NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors, playing a role in excitatory neurotransmission as well. Glycine is metabolized by the liver into ammonia and glyoxylic acid. Glycine metabolized to ammonia can lead to hyperammonemic encephalopathy.
