Decanoylcarnitine is a saturated medium-chain acylcarnitine that is used as a marker for fatty acid oxidation disorders, medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency, especially in newborns, glutaric acidemia type II, and celiac disease. Decanoylcarnitine serves as an additional marker, either alone or in ratio, for the diagnosis of medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency.

Decanoyl-L-carnitine-d3 can be used as an internal standard for the quantification of decanoylcarnitine, decenoylcarnitine, decadienoylcarnitine using GC- or LC-MS methods.
